The Rome Police Department proudly supports Autism Awareness.

In 2019, Sergeant  Thomas Medlin on behalf of the Rome Police Department discovered an Autism Awareness initiative call the "New Rochelle Police Patch Challenge". The challenge was immediately accepted and the Rome Police Department along with the Philip S. McDonald PBA became involved. The "New Rochelle Police Patch Challenge" was started by the New Rochelle Police Department and New Rochelle PBA. The primary goals of the Autism Police Patch Challenge are to promote Autism Awareness and Acceptance in every community across the country by creating and attaching a custom Autism Awareness patch on at least 1 patrol vehicle within each community's Police Department during the month of April. It also encourages at least 1 officer to wear the Autism Awareness patch on their uniform during the month of April.
Since 2017, over 300 agencies including fire and EMS have accepted the challenge. Any money raised has and continues to be donated to local Autism organizations or local Autism charities. Departments have also sent their employees to necessary first responder training in detection and response to calls involving autistic individuals.
To help spread Autism Awareness, the Rome Police Department has created a specially designed a uniform shoulder patch and vehicle patch to show their support. The uniform shoulder patch will be worn by several members of the Rome Police Department during the month of April. All Rome Police Department marked patrol vehicles will also be equipped with the specially designed patch. The Rome Police Department Autism Awareness shoulder patch is also offered to the public for a donation of $10.00 for pick up or $12.00 shipped. All proceeds from the patch sales will be donated to The Kelberman Center. For further information on how to obtain a patch, please contact Sgt. Thomas Medlin at [email protected]and/or by sending a Check or Money Order made payable to the Philip S. McDonald PBA, (memo- Autism Awareness) to Sgt. Thomas Medlin at the Rome Police Department located at 301 N. James Street, Rome, NY 13440.
