The Unity Campaign will support our efforts to obtain a new building space. A long-term building space will allow our youth to have access to stability, support, mental health and trauma resources, normalcy and other important components that will provide them with hope for the future. In addition, this will allow us to meet our growing demand to support more youth in need of our services. Our waitlist currently has over 40 ALICE youth.

We are very grateful for Strong Tower Church for offering a temporary space for our after school program. However, not only is I Believe in Me quickly outgrowing the space, but the space will also no longer be available in the near future.

About I Believe in Me, Inc.

We use our Mentoring Program to help grow self esteem and build character. We include reading and math programs to help our youth develop. We expose them to financial literacy education to help them set goals for careers. We teach hygiene, nutritional guidance, plus wellness including mental health. Our youth join us in outreach efforts in the community to increase socialization skills. Our 50 program participants are ALICE at risk male youths, ages 6 to 16 who live in Frederick. They are 85% black, 12% Latino and 3% white. The majority have mothers who are single head of households with fathers who are not involved in their lives, and with some fathers absent due to incarceration.

IBM has a partnership with Frederick County Public Schools and permission from each family to view each child's Schoology account. We can track homework and assignment practice and see where a student is struggling and offer the tools they need for support. A LINX coordinator from FCPS provided training for our mentors and tutors on how to use the system to support our youth. I Believe In Me aligns with FCPS goals of closing the achievement gap by providing reading and math intervention, as well as homework help.

The program provides structured after-school activities in a safe environment for underserved, at-risk youth living primarily in low income housing communities in Frederick County. These youth face difficult situations, e.g. parents with substance abuse issues or who are incarcerated, gang violence, and/or living in single parent households. Many of these youth are unsupervised after school, on the streets, prey for gang activity, experimenting with illicit substances, and/or engaging in criminal behaviors. The program provides a place to go after school and a caring, qualified adult with whom to talk. It emphasizes experiential learning to promote positive behaviors and teaches honesty, respect, integrity and hard work. The program provides mentoring essential for building rapport with troubled youth and delivers basic assistance, e.g. clothes, food, and school supplies.
