I was introduced to SAMS through my close friend and his family, who are Syrian immigrants. Getting to know my friend’s large extended family as they continue to move to Los Angeles from the Middle East amidst the ongoing crisis growing discord has been an eye-opening experience that has continued to confound and compel me. I find what’s happening in Syria heartbreaking and I simply couldn’t sit by any longer without asking how I could help.
This April, I was fortunate enough to accompany SAMS on a medical mission to Jordan to see first-hand its impact. I spent a week on the ground in Jordan, in operating rooms observing SAMS volunteers providing free surgeries, in Zaatari Refugee Camp where refugees were receiving free medical care at a SAMS multi-specialty center, and in a psycho-social support center, meeting and speaking with children healing from trauma. I couldn’t believe how many people there were in need of real medical attention, and yet everyone greeted me with a smile.
I was incredibly moved by the work SAMS is doing on the ground in Jordan and elsewhere to bring relief to those in need. I felt humbled by the countless doctors, medical staff, volunteers, everyone volunteering their life, time, and energy to helping.
This experience left an indelible mark on my soul. The biggest impact for me is seeing the fight, the spirit, the fortitude and the resilience in the people I met. I feel really honored that I could get to know SAMS, see the work they are doing, and see how much more is needed.
Medical care is a basic human right, necessity and unfortunately for some, a privilege. I feel really humbled and honored to be a part of such an important mission.
