BlWill you help feed the kids this weekend? Blessings in a Backpack provides backpacks of non-perishable, kid-friendly, easily-prepared foods to children who might otherwise go hungry when school meals are unavailable. The children we feed depend on school meals as their primary source of nutrition Monday through Friday, but "What do they do on the weekends?" In Frederick County, more than 11,000 children are at-risk of going hungry when school meals are not available. Many of the children served by BIAB are at risk of being hungry for 65 hours... from lunch in school on Friday until school breakfast Monday morning... 65 hours without enough food to ensure proper nutrition for healthy growth and development. The food provided by Blessings in a Backpack offers a greater opportunity for these children to return to school on Monday better prepared to participate and learn.
Thanks to the dedication of 75-90 volunteers each week and broad community support, 2,500 low income children in local schools are currently ensured hunger-free weekends and school breaks during the school year.
